Westport Lake

Trent & Mersey Canal

Visit the fantastic eco-visitor centre

Did you know Westport Lake has not always been a lake? In fact it was once a grassy area that was used as the local football team's practice ground! Unfortunately the footballers began to get their feet wet as it was prone to flooding and they had to move. The land continued to sink and flood, as previously the land below had been mined.

The collapsed water filled land has left us with what has become a nature reserve. A popular green escape from the city. Now offering even more in the form of the new visitor centre run by the Staffordshire Wildlife Trust .
