In 1932, the Grand Union Canal Company was formed to make the canal more commercially viable and during this time widened the locks up the Hatton flight so that boats could be moved in pairs rather than individually. Families

Well known for being called the ‘Stairway to Heaven’ the impressive lock flight at Hatton near Warwick has 21 locks and lifts the canal 45 metres, in 2 miles. The buildings, lock flight and canal have become important habitats for many plants and animals. It’s a perfect location to sit and watch the wildlife and the boats going through the locks, whilst taking refreshments at the Hatton Café, situated at the top of the locks.

What about schools and groups?

The Hatton Locks Trail, gives children the opportunity to observe 5 of the 21 locks on the Hatton flight and see the old narrow locks, which were built in 1799 alongside the wider locks built in the 1930’s. Children can also explore the piling boat and can see the original floor of the stables which has now been converted into a café and shop.
