WOW takes a stand at the Droitwich Canals Festival

Family excitement as WOW joins in the celebrations at Droitwich. Canals are open again after 72 years abandoned!

As part of the celebrations surrounding the restoration and re-opening of the Droitwich Canals, WOW volunteers ran family activities in the Vines Park over the opening weekend on Saturday 2nd and Sunday 3rd July.

The weekend was a hive of activity with many local people excited by the opening of such an important canal which runs through the centre of Droitwich. Wych barges, loaded with salt from Droitwich, used to be a common site and one elderly lady attending the event remembered the canal boats going passed when she was a young girl.

The Droitwich Canals were re-opened on 1st July 2011, 72 years after they were officially abandoned. The canals were first opened over 240 years ago and now once again they are open for boats to cruise their way through from the Worcester & Birmingham Canal to the River Severn.

WOW has launched a new resource called ‘A Canal Runs Through it’ to celebrate the Droitwich Canals. Why not download this resource and have a go at developing your own Play in Day. Follow this link http://www.wow4water.net/grownups/resources/441

WOW are presently recruiting education volunteers in Droitwich and the surrounding areas to lead waterway activities with schools and uniformed groups, along with leading family guided walks.
