SPRING WATCH EVENT AT LONG EATON SCHOOL ON SATURDAY. ‘Dirty Weekend’ takes place on Erewash Canal British Waterways East Midlands Environment & Heritage Team have recently braved the rain to take part in a BBC Spring Watch ‘Dirty Weekend’ event at Long Eaton School in Derbyshire. Environment & Heritage Manager Richard Bennett, Ecologist Deanne Gow and M&C Officer Jenny Histead ran a series of pond dipping workshops on 6th June to give the kids a hands-on opportunity to see the wide range of bugs and mini-beasts that can be found in the Erewash Canal. The bad weather subsided during the afternoon for the children to take part in a nature walk along the Erewash Canal towpath to Trent Lock, to spot and record some of the larger wild inhabitants of the canal. Their findings were then used to construct a nature database back at the school and contribute to British Waterways wildlife survey.
